“At the center of everything we experience is a story. Stories are always evolving. The only beginning and end to a story is the one that is told or the one we perceive.” Susy Botello
Who I am
Susy is passionate about storytelling and film. She’s a pioneer, an avid speaker, and storyteller spreading the message of the mobile smartphone film community worldwide. She lives in San Diego, California.
Storytelling has been a life-long passion for Susy. She grew up with an American father in the military and a mother from Spain. Experiencing life as a traveler between countries from a very early age she began to realize how much stories empower and connect people around the world.
Susy graduated college with honors and has an Associates in Science Degree in Media Communications. She experienced the events of September 11th during her course work, and it had a very big influence on her passion for smartphone storytelling through film and video.
She began to plan the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego for movies shot with mobile phones in 2004-05 but she did not bring it to the public because the technology was too primitive to make narrative films for the cinema. In 2009, she realized that she could at least launch the festival, through her company, S. Botello Productions™ (2006). She began to promote the challenge to people around the world to make movies with their phone cameras, before the iPhone 4 launched in 2010.
Going on 13 years since launch, the festival has continuously raised the bar for mobile filmmakers and smartphone video storytellers. It created a separate feature film competition in late 2016 for narrative films.
Currently in its 11th annual edition the festival accepts narrative feature films and short films.
The live event festival holds a unique red carpet extravaganza show with participating filmmakers, Q & A Panels, lectures, workshops and awards ceremony. Filmmakers come from all over the world to San Diego to celebrate smartphone filmmaking. Australia, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Germany, are just a few.
Susy Botello created the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking (2017) which has well over 100 episodes all focused on smartphone film and video. She launched the first streaming film and video service for smartphones, Mobile Film Stories (2020) and teaches mobile filmmaking and video production through the San Diego Mobile Film School (2012) with an in-person hands-on approach. Susy has also been presenting panels and lectures during the San Diego Comic-Con from 2016 through 2019. In March 2020, all in-person events were halted in California.
